Paper is really the correct way to send out an invitation,informal or formal,even today. Surprisingly enough,the most formal invitation,for a small wedding is the correctly worded invitation on very good stock,which is handwritten,according to a set formula. The papers can vary,and for a save the date which often opens the door for the event,the bride has much more flexibility in telling guests about the upcoming wedding. It can be very formal up to wildly informal. Relative to papers for the invitations,the best choice is always a heavy stock,and that goes for the envelopes as well. Heavy means at least 100# cover stock for the invitations.. This weight dictum also includes the envelope as well. Often when looking over choices in less expensive stationery books(I own a store that carries these items) you will often note that the envelopes as well as the papers are securely glued down. There are several reasons for this. One of course is theft,but a second reason is also in the mix. It prevents the prospective buyer from “testing”the paper to see the weight,which is often very flimsy. If a bride chooses an invitation in a book that has this drawback,one way to circumvent this is to add a liner to the envelope,which creates interest but also adds a bit of weight.
